During the first several months our responsibility was to lead the team that collected all of the information necessary to begin the new design. We interviewed all of the stakeholders to create a complete picture of the environment that the new design would live in. At the end of the understanding phase we had a cohesive team that held a common picture of the user, the existing software, and the requirements for the new application.

After months of brainstorming, a new vision for ETI Solution emerged. It wasn't the child of any one team member - it synthesized the best thinking of all the team. It was important to visualize all of the thinking during the brainstorming sessions with sketches. We made hundreds of sketches and they represented the team's thinking from the most conceptual to, eventually, the most detailed. Over a period of months the team designed and fine tuned the new application. We would sketch, discuss, re-sketch and finalize the application screen by screen, dialog by dialog.—LR/RL

Once the new direction was clear and most of the application had been sketched the development team could begin implementing the new interface and the supporting code.—LR/RL
